Mango Lassi

Yesterday, at the GNOME Summit in Boston I did a quick presentation of my new desktop input sharing hotness thingy, called "Mango Lassi" (Alternatively known as "GNOME Input Sharing"). Something like a Synergy done right, or an x2x that doesn't suck.

So, for those who couldn't attend, here's a screenshot, which doesn't really tell how great it is, and which might also be a bit confusing:

Mango Lassi Screenshot

And here's a list of random features already available:

And here's a list of missing features:

And finally, here's where you can get it:

git clone http://git.0pointer.de/repos/mango-lassi.git/

gitweb

Oh, and I don't take feature wishlist requests for this project. If you need a feature, implement it yourself. It's Free Software after all! I'd be happy if someone would be willing to work on Mango Lassi in a way that it can become a really good GNOME citizen and maybe even a proper part of it. But personally I'll probably only work on it to a level where it does all I need to work with my Laptop and my Desktop PC on my desk in a sane way. I am almost 100% busy with PulseAudio these days, and thus unable to give Mango Lassi the love it could use. So, stand up now, if you want to take over maintainership!

Hmm, Mango Lassi could use some good artwork, starting with an icon. I am quite sure that someone with better graphic skills then me could easily create a delicious icon perhaps featuring a glass of fresh, juicy Mango Lassi. I'd be very thankful for every icon submission!

Good work!

May I suggest rolling a 0.1 tarball so that packagers can start working on it?

Posted by Lennart at Tue Oct 9 22:16:45 2007
Florent, I am not quite sure that ML is already useful enough for being packaged. If you really want to package it, you are of course free to get your own copy from GIT.

This is amazing.  There's so many cool things one could do with this.

Wow, this is just so cool. Actually I'm an heavy user of Synergy and I think this is already quite good but your tool looks really promising. I'm looking forward for the Drag 'n drop support :)

Cool!!!

How about SSH tunneling for encryption/authentication?  (The downside is that you really want public keys and ssh-agent for seamless operation.)

Posted by Phil at Fri Oct 12 00:24:44 2007
This is excellent! Can't wait for it to become mainstream. I second the use of SSH tunneling for encryption; sounds like the simplest way to do it.

I'd hope that for this type of application (where it's most likely being used just in your own office) authentication and encryption wouldn't be very useful.  An optional "don't allow a connection without asking me first" kind of thing like vino has might be appropriate.

BTW, Lennart, your Makefile is awesome.  Seriously.

Mango-Lassi is exactly what I’ve wanted for a long time.

But alas, currently it uses 11 MiB of memory. Not very suitable for my laptop with 64 MiB of memory.

does this work with apps that need the hardware cursor, like quake?  also, can somebody that has this working please post some documentation?  I have it compiled, and I run mango-lassi on two machines and both machines see the other's mango-lassi service through avahi-discover, but I don't have the window telling me that  input sharing is dialog...like in the screenshot.

great work!

I would love to see Mango Lassi ported to Windows!
I've been using synergy for few years, but lately i have had alot of lag issues and Googling around seems to comfirm that I'm not the only one.
I don't think anyone's developing Synergy anymore so I don't know what to do to fix the issues and I'm not aware of any other programs like it.

If anyone is interested in a .deb for Ubuntu this seems to work great for me.  I just used alien to convert snorp.net's RPM version.  I just had to install libavahi-ui0 and it worked great.

Awsome work! Thanks for doing this.

There is one thing that does not work for me: reordering of screens. I am not so experienced with C, but I'll try to fiddle around a bit.

If Mac gets supported some time in the future, this will become the Uber Sprinting Tool.

Is there a way to switch between desktops without having a keyboard hooked up to each machine?  I'd like to be able to switch between desktops using only one keyboard for all machines.  From my limited testing, it seems that you must have a keyboard on each machine so that you can press both of the shift keys at the same time so that you can switch desktops.  Am I missing something?

Hi!  Mango-Lassi looks like a very nice application with tons of potential.  Had a few problems though and thought you might appreciate some feedback.

You can move the mouse off the edge of the first screen to use second computer, but the only way to get back is the double-shift-key trick; really want to go back and forth using only mouse.

The wrong computer was chosen as the master; there needs to be a way to specify which keyboard/mouse you're actually using, or have ML just "notice" which one is being used.

Could not use the Up/Down buttons in preferences to arrange the systems in proper left to right order.

There appears to be no way to use Mango-Lassi prior to logging in to each system.  With Synergy my machines boot up sharing so i can use the shared keyboard/mouse to log into each computer.  Since 2 of my machines don't even have a keyboard/mouse attached, Mango-Lassi just wouldn't be usable.

Anyway, it looks great and is obviously built on more modern architecture than Synergy.  Hope you develop this further, thanks a lot.  Cheers.

That is exactly what I was looking for! I was looking for some Zeroconf/Avahi support to Synergy, and fell on that exactly beautiful piece of software. I encourage you to continue your work on it, as it could easily become some bundled app under Gnome (or other).

thanks

Wonderfull program !
Could you improve it and do a release please !
For example synergy work with with dualscreen but mango-lassi doesn't work with dual screen.
I also fail to swap 2 screens, sometimes the right screen go to left, side are inverted, so i must connect me in the other order.
Could you contact me?

Thanks for your job !

Here's one to add to the list of missing features: xmove support.
You know the way in X you can be running an app on one machine, and displaying it on another? xmove words kind of like an X man-in-the-middle, so you can detach an app from a display, and reattach it on some other display (on a different machine if you want), but unlike traditional X forwarding you can do this without killing the process of the app in the process.
Long story short... with xmove together with clever hacking you could move a window off one computer's screen and have it appear on the other. :)
There's at least one drawback though... whenever you xmove a program like that, all of the windows made by it will move to the other screen, not just the one. Which is kinda lame, although something like Devilspie could possibly be used to obscure the ones which got dragged across by the one which you did want moved.

PS, haven't used Mango Lassi yet, don't have multiple boxes, looking forward to it though!

Posted by Martin at Sat Jan 3 14:21:43 2009
Mango-lassi is brilliant.

I still see the occasional bug, but never one that requires more than dropping and reconnecting a given desktop.

I've been using it for about 6 months now, and it is far better than synergy if you are lucky enough to be running multiple instances of X.

If you could add the extra functionality t allow application windows to be dragged and dropped, and file copy/paste support, it would be awesome.

Don't let it get shelved amongst other projects!

Excellent work

Posted by ssam at Tue Mar 3 17:58:56 2009
maybe xpra could be used instead of xmove.

Hello people,

Unlike all of you, who are clearly from some advanced alien planet, I am an inhabitant of planet earth and I found my way here following a few links after typing in, "better than synergy", into Google. All I wanted was a piece of software that allowed my mouse to go off the side of my PC's monitor and onto my laptop without any difficulty. Synergy works for me, but every so often there is a glitch and I have to wait several seconds before the mouse pointer stabilises again. This is annoying and so I thought I'd be able to find something better online. It looks like this IS better, but I have no frigging idea how to download and use the thing. It seems like I'd need to get a degree in programming just to be able to converse with you people! Waaaah!! Why couldn't there just be a download link where all I had to do was to double clickto install? I guess i'll be sticking to Synergy...

@Confused:

First you have to be running Linux (we'll assume Ubuntu, or maybe Debian).  Then run the following commands in a terminal:

sudo apt-get install git-core curl build-essential intltool gettext automake1.9 intltool libglib2.0-dev libdbus-1-dev libdbus-glib-1-dev  libgtk+2.0-directfb-dev  libgtk2.0-dev libxtst-dev  libavahi-glib-dev libavahi-client-dev  libavahi-ui-dev  libnotify-dev libnotify-dev-gtk2.10 libglade2-dev libgladeui-1-dev
git clone http://git.0pointer.de/repos/mango-lassi.git/
cd mango-lassi
./bootstrap.sh
make
sudo make install

Then you should be able to run the app by typing mango-lassi and pressing enter.

Is there a bugzilla anywhere? Just tried herzi's latest, very impressed with the ease of use, but managed to make it stuck (not crash, just get to a point that mouse and keyboard are unusable and space is continuously pressed, had to kill via ssh on one machine). I'd like to write it somewhere where someone will take notice :) I'll put it here for lack of a better place:

Had a not very conventional setup - two links between the two machines, eth0 (static ip on both) and wlan0 (dynamic ip). avahi figured the static (don't know how, but that's great since it was faster / less latency). Everything worked, then I unplug the ethernet on the laptop (had a laptop and desktop pc). Boom - mouse of pc stops working. so does mouse of laptop. and keyboards of both. Ctrl-alt-F1 still works (unsurprisingly), but on the pc on the console it is like the 'space-char' is continuously pressed. Luckily on the laptop no such problem. At some point I had the nice floating "<==" arrow on both (slightly funny - each accusing the other :). Killed the process on both and everything was fine.
Using latest from git (29df2d4272f90582), one pc is ubuntu, the other fedora 13.

Just to finish in a positive note, the experience is much more streamlined then synergy (I use quicksynergy), so very nice work overall, keep it up!

So yes, if you comment here, I might censor you. If you don't want to be censored your are welcome to comment on your own blog instead.
