Yummy Mango Yummy Lassi Yummy

Zeeshan, Mango Lassi tastes a lot different than a milk shake, believe me! Also, even if Mango Lassi was actually a western thing, do you know that just recently I was witness of Sjoerd[1] ordering a Vindaloo Pizza (or was it Korma?) at a Boston restaurant -- italian pizza with indian-style curry on top. Now, that's what some people might be calling "ignorant of indian cuisine". But actually I think that, like in music, mixing different styles, combining things from different origins is a good thing, and is what makes culture live.

Sorry i've been noticing the comments back and forth and just had to comment. :P. Mango lassi is basically mango milk shake. the name is a misnomer and does not exist in pakistan (and india too i'm assuming). the reason it probably doesn't taste the same is b/c the mango's used for the milkshake you drink are from india. Indian mango's do taste very different from mango's of other regions. Also they probably add some more ingredients to make the taste slightly augmented.

So therefore Mango Lassi is not Lassi in the classical sense of the word but who knows. It is kind of catchy.

As far as I know, "Mango Lassi" is done with yogurt (like real Lassi), milkshakes are normally done with milk.

"Mango Lassi" is not mango milkshake; the origin and ingredients are different. And as for it not being "original lassi" - well, live with it. Everywhere the world over there are dishes that share little more than the name and an ingredient or two with their originals. That doesn't make them better or worse, just different and new - and a welcome development.

There is now a drink, made be making a rather lassi-like drink and flavoring it with mango:s. People call it "mango lassi", and that'll be the name no matter how people protest.

Here in Japan there is a very popular dish called "kare raisu" - Curry rice. The brown slop called "curry" actually has almost nothing in common with the Indian type of stew preparation by the same name anymore; it's really more akin to a thick European beef stew. And the latest development of "Curry soup" has left the last vestiges of its origin behind - but it's still called "Curry".

The world over you get a flat bread with toppings called "pizza", half of which would make a Napolitan pizza baker to cry himself to sleep - and he would react with dumbfounded incredulity to any claims that most of the rest can even be called a pizza. They're still "pizza", though, even if they have little in common with the Italian dish of the same name.

There's "sushi" the world over that has little or nothing to do with vinegared rice; "hamburger" is served without beef, without any meat at all, and without the bun. If you just travel far enough, you can get hot gazpacho; coffee with no actual caffeine and not made with coffee beans; beer made from soy beans; dry pot au feu without boullion; dolma made without grape leaves; pho without noodles.

Food changes. And usually it's for the better. If it weren't, the new dish would not survive.

Considering the way we make Pizza is purely American and only has a slight resemblance to what the Italians invented, I'd say it's fair game to do with it as we please.

How you can confuse vindaloo and korma I'll never know.  :)  Although both delicious, they're quite different -- korma being the more "accessible" of the two.
