It should involve radically improving ALSA (more user- and developer-friendly on all fronts, using native sampling rates if available even with dmix) or introducing something else. Seriously, it's the worst high-profile part of the Linux kernel that I know of. No wait, the suspend mess is worse but that's it.
If you don't understand my anger try programming against ALSA (convoluted and buggy), try reading its programming documentation (mostly there is none), try creating an alsarc file (it's hard. really and unnecessarily hard).
Also it doesn't seem to switch the sampling rate to 44.1 kHz if you play something with that rate and the card supports it. OSS does that, even with its dmix equivalent enabled. And I, for one, do care about sound quality. Oh yeah, the drivers for my nice sound cards (M-Audio, one PCI one USB) broke lately, too. With two different kernels and distributions. They also broke about two years ago. Yay ALSA!
